Why you should try out the new Yoast SEO analysis

In next couple of months, Yoast SEO 10.0 will see the light of day. In it, you’ll find a brand new SEO analysis. One that’s based on thorough SEO research. Last year, we evaluated all existing assessments and added new ones to make the analysis reflect the search engines of today. You can now try out this brand new analysis! In Yoast SEO 9.4 you can easily switch from the current to the new analysis (and back). So, go ahead and see if your content meets the SEO standards of today! We’d love to hear your feedback.

Why a new analysis?

Search engines evolve. What used to be important a decade ago might not be relevant today. As search engines become smarter, our SEO analysis should too! That’s why we decided to test if all our checks are still relevant.

A multidisciplinary team, consisting of SEO experts, linguists and developers, scrutinized the SEO analysis: Are some SEO assessment redundant nowadays? Should we add new ones? Or change the weight of certain factors? We checked all of them, removed some, added a new assessment and adapted the calculations. For details on the changes in the new analysis, please check the release post of Yoast SEO 9.4.

This video shows why and how we changed the Yoast SEO analysis:

Why try it out?

This is your chance to find out if your content stands the test of time! Try the most advanced SEO analysis out there. See what happens to your posts’ scores. Are they still optimized, do you still get an overall green bullet for your post?

Of course, we tested this new version extensively. But before we push this change to millions of Yoast SEO users, we like to see how it works with your content. Your feedback will help us fine-tune the analysis before we release Yoast SEO 10.0.

What happens if you test?

First of all: don’t fret! Nothing will happen to your posts or their rankings. It’s just the SEO scores that will be recalculated. And that’s what we’re interested in. Did your scores change? Did you get more green or red bullets? How do you feel about the new assessment? Do you think the feedback you get on your content makes sense?

If you participate, we’d like to ask you some questions about your experiences. So, if you switch to the new analysis, you’ll receive two short questionnaires we’d like to ask you to fill out: one a couple of weeks after you switched, and one after you’ve been using it for a while. Please share your thoughts, because we value your feedback!

How do you participate in this test?

Switching is easy. Go to the Yoast SEO settings in the sidebar of your WordPress dashboard. Click on General and select the features tab. You’ll see this screen:

recalibration toggle yoast seo 9.4

Here you use the toggle to turn on the new Yoast SEO analysis. That’s it! Now your content will be analyzed according to the latest standards in SEO. Don’t like it? You can easily toggle back to the old analysis too!

Make sure that you are updated to Yoast SEO 9.4 in order to try the beta!

Any questions? Feel free to ask them in the comments!

I have switched on the recalibrated analysis, but it doesn’t appear to be working. I get a message telling me the ‘recalibration beta is active’, and a spinning wheel.

I’m having this same problem. And I don’t have a github account, so I don’t want to go on there to discuss the problem. I suppose I’ll just deactivate the beta, which is unfortunate.

    • Willemien Hallebeek

Hi John, Sorry for this issue! If you have Premium, please email us directly with further details. Otherwise, please let us know via our GitHub repository (https://github.com/Yoast/wordpress-seo/issues/new/choose)

2nd email promoting the changes and the 2nd time I get the error ‘Sorry this doesn’t work with your site setup’. There’s nothing difficult with my site setup, it’s a simple mobile first template.

So I don’t do SEO until version 10 is released just in case the current version is out of date in some areas?

    • Willemien Hallebeek

Hi KP, It hard to say what goes wrong exactly with your site setup. If you have Premium, can you email us directly with further details? Then we can look at it more closely. Otherwise, please let us know via our GitHub repository (https://github.com/Yoast/wordpress-seo/issues/new/choose).

Hi! So far the beta versions are pretty great. However, the bullet points in unordered lists are being wrongly marked as the beginning of sentences. It’s really hurting my product Readability scores.

I use your SEO and have purchased the keyword analysis. Out of the blue my wordpress editor went over to Gutenberg. What a shock. I have been struggling with it and for new posts okay I can work it, but existing pages its a nightmare when freshening up your posts and introducing new stuff. But what really affects Yoast is that it lies over half of the editing area or midway up the page when its supposed to be at the bottom out of the way. I try to collapse it but it won’t shift its position. Is it my pc, lap top? or is it just not working with this Gutenberg editor. I have consulted my hosting provider.

    • Willemien Hallebeek

Hi Anne, If you’re on Yoast SEO 9.2 or higher our plugin should work with Gutenberg, but perhaps there are some other issues with your site setup or conflicts with other plugins? If you have Premium, you can email us directly with further details. Otherwise, please let us know via our GitHub repository (https://github.com/Yoast/wordpress-seo/issues/new/choose)

I activated the beta under the Features tab and checked that I have 9.4 installed. But, I get the following error:

‘We’re sorry! Unfortunately, the recalibrated analysis beta doesn’t work as intended with your current setup yet. Please deactivate the recalibration beta under “SEO – General – Features” and please try again later. We value your input! If you can’t access the feature page, please contact your administrator.’

Hi Tasha, We’re sorry you’re getting this error message! If you have Premium, you can email us directly with further details. Otherwise, please let us know via our GitHub repository (https://github.com/Yoast/wordpress-seo/issues/new/choose)

Well, I activated the beta. But it throws the following error:

‘We’re sorry! Unfortunately, the recalibrated analysis beta doesn’t work as intended with your current setup yet. Please deactivate the recalibration beta under “SEO – General – Features” and please try again later. We value your input! If you can’t access the feature page, please contact your administrator.’

Any way of resolving this instead of simply de-activating?

Okay I figured this out that this works only with your free version but if you have the premium version it does not!

So I activated it on one website and voila, it told me it does not support my website version and to deactivate it!!!???

Chris Ecklund  • 1 week ago

I would love to try it as well but this toggle switch and other items you mention in your blogs do not exists in my Yoast version. I have premium and it does not give the option to upgrade to the new version.

    • Ben Vaassen
Ben Vaassen  • 7 days ago

      Hi Chris,

if the update for Yoast SEO Premium doesn’t show, it’s best to download the newest version of Yoast SEO Premium via MyYoast. Then remove and reinstall Yoast SEO Premium or manually install via FTP (https://kb.yoast.com/kb/how-can-i-update-my-premium-plugin/#ftp).

You can always email our support team if you get stuck since you have Yoast SEO Premium! The same goes for issues you have with the beta analysis.

      Thanks and good luck!

I’m new to this whole Blogging and marketing Idea, so being able to navigate my way around Yoast, is a work in progress for me. Any helpful Ideas for a newly starting person? what should I expect? How long will it take for me to lean how to fully use Yoast? Anything that would motivate me not to give up to soon?

    What is my content setup?

  25. caroline powley

ok, signed up for the improved version. I have a question about how this will affect a recipe or craft instruction. I seem to have issues before and it clearly dissed my readability grade, I am doing a recipe this week so wonder how to approach this, Clearly, if I have 1 teaspoon on 4 different types of ingredients it is going to give me a poor score for the repetition.
How do I get around this and make my SEO and readability happy?
    Caroline Powley

    • Willemien Hallebeek

Hi Caroline, thanks for your question. The readability checks didn’t change in the new version, so you won’t notice any difference in your readability scores. If you have listed items, like the ingredients in your recipe, you’re very likely to have repetition, don’t worry too much about those. Just make sure the rest of your copy is well-written: don’t make your sentences too long, don’t use passive voice and create clear paragraphs. That should help! And perhaps add, apart from the instructions, a nice description of the recipe itself in which you use your focus keyword and related keywords enough. Because you’ll need content to rank! And, if you have recipes on your site, you might want to look into adding structure data too: https://yoast.com/structured-data-for-recipes/

Hi, sorry that happens for you! Would you mind helping us out to determine the exact cause of the problem?

First, can you check if the issue is resolved by using Yoast SEO 9.4 with the recalibration toggle set to ‘Off’?

Second, could you perform a conflict check (https://kb.yoast.com/kb/how-to-check-for-plugin-conflicts/) and inform us of the results? If you have Premium, feel free to email us directly, otherwise, please let us know via our GitHub repository (https://github.com/Yoast/wordpress-seo/issues/new/choose).

      Thanks for your help!

I was invited for traveltalk.dk (Premium) to betatest I dont see the toggle feature, that makes testing possible where you say it is supposed to be.
That was my first test result :)
