Facebook author tags & Yoast SEO

Last week, Facebook did a post on their media site about Facebook author tags. Many blogs, including sites we love like SearchEngineJournal, picked it up as though it was the best new thing since sliced bread. It’s not, obviously, mostly because it’s not actually new. You see, Facebook did release their author tags in June, but not this year, not last year, but two whole years ago. We included it in Yoast SEO 2 days later. Two years ago. This is what a Facebook author tag looks like.

The confusion about how new the Facebook author tags feature was caused us to be slightly surprised when we suddenly got questions from our WordPress SEO Premium customers as to whether we’d include it. We did however write a piece on our knowledge base about how to implement Facebook author tags with our SEO plugin.

Facebook OpenGraph support in WP SEO by Yoast

Facebook meta data is put on the page in so-called OpenGraph tags. WordPress SEO has some of the most extensive Facebook OpenGraph support you’ll find in plugins out there. If you enable OpenGraph on the Social settings page, it’ll all happen automatically:

OpenGraph tags

Did you know that OpenGraph tags are used by more sites than just Facebook? Pinterest uses them too and Twitter and Google+ actually rely on them too when there are no specific tags for their platforms.

So if you set a Facebook image and nothing else, that image will be used on those platforms too!

For the Facebook author tags feature to work though, you actually have to go into the user profile page of your WordPress install and enter your own Facebook profile URL. That’s it. The plugin will then automatically add more things, like the publisher tags, image tags, a description tag, article type etc. etc. Lots of things you don’t need to think about, we’ll optimize it for you.

If you want to further optimize your OpenGraph output, you can change some of the things the plugin will output on the Social tab of the WordPress SEO metabox:

We recently added the recommended image size in the descriptions of those upload fields, mostly as we kept forgetting them ourselves.

Just one more reason to use WordPress SEO by Yoast!

This plugin has allowed Facebook to eventually publish the correct WP post image to a facebook post and not allow Facebook to randomly – or in most cases not so randomly – pull a footer logo. Thank you Yoast!

    Thanks!

I can get the author tag to appear. I don’t yet see the results in Facebook. Are we waiting on a Facebook update on their side of things?

Has any one found success with this one already?

Did you make sure that Facebook has the most recent version? You can do so by running it through the Facebook debugger. Also, did you enable Follow on your Facebook profile?

Thanks Yoast and Joost for this great information. Facebook has come up with another new feature to dominate others like Google, Twitter and more. The Facebook author tag provides structured information about the description and title. At last we can say that Facebook will also now give credit to the authors for its post.

Thanks for sharing such Informative article.

The news, if you take the time to read it through to the end, is, that Facebook has a new feature that will collect articles that you are author of and show them below a shared link that you authored (like they are already doing with their “viral” posts on your timeline). To find articles by the same author they use the author tag.

So, the author collection is new, not the author tag.
