SEO Link Analysis Firefox Extension
Remember that Greasemonkey script that I recently updated? Well, maybe you should just forget about that... I'd been working on a version of that script which works on Yahoo Site Explorer and MS Webmaster portal too, and now I've gone even one step further: I've bundled the three of them, and turned them into a Firefox extension!
If you're not convinced yet you should go get it now, here are some screenshots:
So here is the SEO Link Analysis extension!
Update: just updated the script to 1.0.1 to fix a change in Yahoo!'s interface.
Another update: 1.0.2 is now available for download.

Wow, this plug-in is amazing. Great job.
by dave on 12 December, 2007 at 02:09
Hey Joost,
I installed the plugin but does it work automatically or is there a place where you can switch it on/off ? It’s activated in the add-ons but I can’t figure out how to get this very nice plugin to show me what I like to know :D
dave
by Joost de Valk on 12 December, 2007 at 02:26
it works automatically, although you have to restart firefox, just as with every other plugin, and then just do a link check for a domain on Yahoo Site Explorer for instance...
by Micah Fisher-Kirshner on 12 December, 2007 at 03:12
Very nice, although would be nice to be able to download into Excel as well.
by Dennis G on 12 December, 2007 at 03:23
Joost,
This ROCKS!
Or as we say in Dutch, Reetecool... :)

by Nathan on 12 December, 2007 at 05:59
awesome - the other day when I read that your greasemonkey script was updated - I thought it would be awesome if it was a firefox extension - and now it is.
by hcabbos on 12 December, 2007 at 06:13
Still confused. Where do you go in Firefox to use this extension?
by Tjeerd on 12 December, 2007 at 10:40
Joost,
The plugin is installed, Firefox has been restarted, but once I logon to Google Webmaster Tools and check the "Pages with external links" section, nothing can be seen (at least, nothing extra).
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; nl; rv:1.8.1.11) Gecko/20071127 Firefox/2.0.0.11
by Joost de Valk on 12 December, 2007 at 10:41
remember to click on to a page... nothing will happen in the overview area of the links section.
by dave on 12 December, 2007 at 10:42
Did that but without positive result..I do some other plugins running maybe that's the problem ?
dave
by Joost de Valk on 12 December, 2007 at 10:44
hmm which version of ffox do you run?
by Tjeerd on 12 December, 2007 at 10:44
Same here... "Pages with external links" is not the overview area.
by Tjeerd on 12 December, 2007 at 10:46
Ah... My bad - It's:
Login -> Links -> Pages with External Links -> click on any number behind any of the links in that overview.
Sorry Joost - works here :-)
by Joost de Valk on 12 December, 2007 at 10:47
could both of you send me a screenshot? joost at this domain
by Joost de Valk on 12 December, 2007 at 10:48
hehehehe ok tjeerd, glad to hear.
by Tjeerd on 12 December, 2007 at 10:51
It's not flawless though - many links are displayed as "link not found", but a quick check learns the links are there...
by Joost de Valk on 12 December, 2007 at 11:00
Ok now I really need a screenshot, and the URL's :) all the issues I have encountered in which that occurred, I'd fixed :)
by Tjeerd on 12 December, 2007 at 11:10
Email with screenshots sent.
by Henri van den Hoof on 12 December, 2007 at 11:54
Works super for me in Google and Yahoo. Thanks again Joost for your continued efforts on these handy tools :-)
by Joost de Valk on 12 December, 2007 at 12:10
Ok Tjeerd, the problem is that on most of those sites where you do have links, they either use:
- redirect scripts
- links with an affiliate code in it, instead of the exact URL
The script is set pretty "tight", I'll try and find a way to make sure that it matches those affiliate URL's when it can't find anything else. There's a few URL's which I don't understand, I'll mail you about those.

Joost,
I haven't personally checked each and every single one, but I'll await your email and see what the outcome of that will be. Thanks for the support so far :-)

Works fine in webmaster tools, can't figure out how to run in Yahoo..
by Joost de Valk on 12 December, 2007 at 12:48

Very cool! Can you explain what the different colours and strike-throughs mean?
by Joost de Valk on 12 December, 2007 at 16:40
Yes, I should copy over that info from the original greasemonkey page I guess :P
orange strike through is a nofollow link, black is normal, red is not found.
by hcabbos on 12 December, 2007 at 17:14
Alright. Now I understand this tool. This is sweet but I too am finding "Link not found" on pages that are operational and have no redirect scripts and/or affiliate code.
by Robbert on 12 December, 2007 at 18:30
Very nice extension, but I would like to see an option to sort by PR and website :-)
Hope you can implement this in a later version!
by Longhand on 12 December, 2007 at 20:18

Are You planning to update it later to make compatible with Site Explorer too? (ho have the ability using operators like site when checking backlinks.

by Joost de Valk on 12 December, 2007 at 22:41
@Robbert: that's harder then you think :)
@Longhand: it does work with site explorer, just not with normal Yahoo Search, before I do that, I have to find a way to disbale it.
@Hobo SEO: I'm a Mac user, so I feel the pain... What's going wrong? Which version of ffox?

by SEO Company Canada on 13 December, 2007 at 01:55
Hey Joost, I've already found a couple bugs. The first thing is if the site exists on a page that has multiple links it picks up the first one which can be deceiving. Some directories have both an image of the site, and the URL. So it picks up the image instead of the link with anchor text.
The second is it is reporting a lot of sites saying Link not found, when they are there (good examples of this are on MyBlogLog and LinkedIn links are visible when I view page, but not according to the FF plugin). Cheers, and good work!!

@Stephen: hmm, any chance of emailing me the URL for that one?
by Joost de Valk on 13 December, 2007 at 13:56
For those of you who got the "matches" error on Yahoo: install the newest version, 1.0.1 that should fix it!
by Sebastian on 13 December, 2007 at 15:01
Thanks, this tool works great, even with my ancient FF version. I'm just curious why it spams the referrer stats with "https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/externallinks" hits that actually are requests which would work without an HTTP_REFERER too.
by Joost de Valk on 13 December, 2007 at 15:03
hmm Sebastian, good point, i'll check it out for a later version.
by deInternetMarketeer on 13 December, 2007 at 15:29
Worked fine in the beginning, then matches errors.
Installed new version and with link: it works fine but with linkdomain: the matches error shows up again.
by seo bristol on 13 December, 2007 at 18:14
Hi Joost
It's looking like it's going to be a fantastic tool but I'm using 1.0.1 and I'm still getting the matches error...
by Joost de Valk on 13 December, 2007 at 18:16
SEO Bristol: can you send me a screenshot + the url? And can you verify that you're indeed running 1.0.1 by looking at your add-ons menu? Firefox has the nasty habit of caching stuff :P
by Joost de Valk on 13 December, 2007 at 18:39
And another update to fix issues with Yahoo! SiteExplorer, the link now points to version 1.0.2 :)
by Joost de Valk on 13 December, 2007 at 18:41
@Sebastian: latest version removes that referer spam as well.

by SEO Company Canada on 13 December, 2007 at 19:48
When you install a new version make sure to remove any old ones or you will have multiple showing up in your Addon screen.
by Joost de Valk on 13 December, 2007 at 21:10
@SEO Company Canada: yes indeed, thx for mentioning that, that's because I still make the extension the lame ass way, I'll fix that soon.
by nv1962 on 13 December, 2007 at 23:37
Awesome Firefox extension, Joost. Don't want to clutter up with comments elsewhere, but I have two of your WP plugins in use on my little blog, and mentioned / linked back on the "about" page. The contact form thingie is great! Back on topic: now that I've figured out that it drills down on external links to individual pages, I appreciate it even more. Really handy tool, even though in my case it's more about satisfying my curiosity than justification (it's a low-traffic personal blog after all - which is fine with me!).
Hele fijne feestdagen gewenst!

Hey Joost,
Great script - it was working superbly for me the first day but now I get an error in siteexplorer - "Error: matches has no content". I tried installing the 1.0.2 bugfix but it hasn't helped.
Any ideas?
Thanks
by Joost de Valk on 14 December, 2007 at 11:52
Hi, Could you: A check if you've installed the new script correctly and removed the old script? Just look in your add-ons and check whether you have just the 1.0.2 release installed. B if that's the case, sent me an email with the URL and a screenshot :)
by Financial Blog on 14 December, 2007 at 11:56
Hi Joost,
That did the trick - thanks! I didn't realise that it wouldn't overwrite the previous addon.
It now works like a charm again - you're a genius!

Hey Joost -
Killer plug-in. Blackwell from ericonsearch sent it to me, and I think it's one of the strongest SEO tools I've used in a long time.
Quick question for you - it's working great w/ the yahoo site explorer & webmaster tools, but when I run a search on yahoo like this:
"linkdomain:competitorsite.com -linkdomain:mysite.com" it's not working. Is there any way to make it work on this type of search?
Thanks!
