New plugin: Post Connector

If you’re an advanced WordPress user, you’ll have “abused” taxonomies quite often to relate post types to each other. Now you might think “abused? but that’s what they’re for, right?” Well… Not entirely. Sometimes you just want to relate posts directly to posts. There are loads of reasons why you’d want to do this, for instance I might want to relate plugins to this post as I talk about them This functionality is exactly what our new plugin Post Connector offers.

The backstory

Sometimes, in business, you get lucky. We did recently when we were lucky enough to find a kick ass new senior developer within one (!!) day of posting the job posting. Barry Kooij joined us and has been showing his skills on various plugin projects already. Barry already had a premium plugin going which we “acqui-hired” along with him.

When I saw this plugins code, I knew I wanted to hire Barry. I have to admit I was slightly scared by the code too. Barry is the kind of developer that makes me weep at my own ineptitude to properly structure and document code. You’ll find out what his new skills mean for our other plugins soon, if you haven’t already.

The plugin used to be called Sub Posts but we’ve decided to rename it Post Connector, and it is now available on Yoast.com.

Some of you might know about a plugin called Posts to Posts from Scribu. I loved that plugin, but Scribu himself has entered it into “hibernation mode”, which makes our, fully supported premium plugin, all the more valuable.

Future plans

We have lots more features planned for this plugin and will be entering into an active release schedule with it. Along with those releases, we’ll be working on our marketing materials, as I realise we can do a better job of explaining what this plugin does. For now, go to the Post Connector plugin page and check it out!

I agree, I myself could think of a couple of uses for this plugin straight away, I think it looks more complicated than it really is.

Good luck and congratulations on the release!

How about those that purchased the sub posts plugin? Does our license transfer.

    • Barry KooijBy Barry Kooij on 28 January, 2014

It does, you will receive an email with a new license code and a download link tomorrow! I’ve just sent an email to all Sub Posts users.

  10. SurbmaBy Surbma on 29 January, 2014

I’m using Posts 2 Posts for a while, but saw Sub Posts, that it would worth the switch. Now it is a must have plugin for me. :)

I’d like to contribute in the translation, but the project is not added yet (even WordPress SEO Premium is not added there). So please add them to GlotPress and we can start translating your new plugins.

I’m looking forward for Barry’s works!

Surbma, can you elaborate on why you chose Post Connector over Posts 2 Posts?

    • Barry KooijBy Barry Kooij on 6 February, 2014

Thank you! Post Connector is now ready for translations at http://translate.yoast.com/projects/post-connector

Definitely, a great effort. However, I say that tagging this price with price is not a good idea, unless its tested. The history is such plugins is not great.. Many a times load issues and incorrect and unnecessary tagging were the issues identified.

I am using a Appthemes coupon theme and have developed a blog excerpt to display on the store pages, see page http://deliverycode.co.uk/stores/argos/. The excerpt is displayed between the live and unreliable codes. Could the plugin be used for this purpose?

  13. BradBy Brad on 30 January, 2014

I use Posts to Posts a lot and would love an alternative, but until this has the ability to attach metadata to each link it isn’t powerful enough for my needs, but I definitely will pay close attention to updates.

Additionally, are there any plans to offer an effective way to transition from Posts to Posts to Post Connector?

    • Barry KooijBy Barry Kooij on 30 January, 2014

Thanks for the feedback, Brad! I’ve put both the link metadata and the importer on our roadmap.

      • BradBy Brad on 30 January, 2014

Great and I’d actually be interested in checking this out immediately but need to know how it saves information in the database. Does it use its own tables like P2P or does it use postmeta? I guess I just don’t want to spend the money before knowing what kind of merge I’d be looking at.

  15. Jacob DubailBy Jacob Dubail on 30 January, 2014

    Great looking plugin!
I see that it supports MultiSite, but can I connect posts between sites? If the main site houses all of the blog posts, am I able to connect a post/page on a subsite to blog posts from the main site?
    Thanks,
    Jacob

    • Barry KooijBy Barry Kooij on 31 January, 2014

No, by default you can only connect posts within the same site.

  16. Nick OrtizBy Nick Ortiz on 30 January, 2014

This looks interesting. Video shows set-up of plugin, but not what end results look like. Are there some screen-shots or video what what end results look like on the page?

  20. Grant PalinBy Grant Palin on 2 February, 2014

I’ve used Posts 2 Posts for a while, and am a bit worried about it’s inactive status, even though it’s currently stable. I might feel better with a premium offering that is actively developed and supported. So kudos. I do have some queries…

    1. If I buy the single site license for testing, can I then upgrade to the 5-site license for the difference in price? Or will that be another full purchase?

    2. The “Post” in the plugin’s name – does that mean it works for posts only, or can it be used to connect other content types, e.g. pages, bbPress topics, other content types?

    • Joost de ValkBy Joost de Valk on 2 February, 2014

      Hi Grant

1: yes you can, fully automated even, by going to https://yoast.com/support/licenses/ and following the steps there :)

2: it works for all post types.

      • Grant PalinBy Grant Palin on 2 February, 2014

Thanks Joost, good to know. I may try a single to test on my rebuild-in-progress this week.

      • MichaelBy Michael on 3 February, 2014

Wow, so can I use this plugin to localize my posts and pages for a multi-location business, by using it conjunction with your Local SEO plugin? Seems like it should work, since your Local SEO plugin creates a Locations post type. That would be amazing, and I’d appreciate any help you can offer in how to set it up for maximum benefit from the combo.

  21. Wouter FrankhuizenBy Wouter Frankhuizen on 2 February, 2014

    Hi,

First of all. I am a big fan of your wordpress SEO plugin. Probably gonna buy the premium one. About Post Connector: if i am correct this is a related post plugin right? Why is this a better plugin then YARPP for instance? My website got more then 160 posts. Is it possible to get them connected with eachother by use of Post Connector? If yes, how?

    Thanks!

    • JasonBy Jason on 5 February, 2014

Great website you have Wouter Frankhuizen. Looks very clean.

      • Wouter FrankhuizenBy Wouter Frankhuizen on 6 February, 2014

Thank you very much Jason. That’s a really nice compliment :)

    • Barry KooijBy Barry Kooij on 6 February, 2014

It is not a related posts plugin perse, but can definitely be used for this purpose. Simply create a relation betweens posts (and posts) and you’re ready to link posts to each other.

      • Wouter FrankhuizenBy Wouter Frankhuizen on 6 February, 2014

Hi Barry, Thanks for your reply. I’m really fan of Yoast plugins but i dont see a big plus for my site. I make use of categorize posts and tags on posts. But what is the real benefit of this plugin? Seo? Usability?

  22. PabbBy Pabb on 5 February, 2014

please make the install guide so that it could be easy for novice just like me .. please also confirm what version i’ll get it will be post conector or sub posts version

    • Joost de ValkBy Joost de Valk on 5 February, 2014

We’re working on improving our documentation :) Sub posts basically no longer exists, post connector is all there is now :)

  23. JasonBy Jason on 5 February, 2014

Can you show examples of what this plugin looks like on a website. Before I purchase. Thanks

  24. palPalaniBy palPalani on 6 February, 2014

    Interesting plugin.
Want to try before buying. Is there any demo available?

    • Barry KooijBy Barry Kooij on 6 February, 2014

Sorry, there is no demo available. However, if you’re not happy with one of our products within 30 days of any purchase, Yoast BV will refund the full price you paid upon request.

It’s the pleasure aspect that’s a part of these activities permit it being most-searched for spot, and obviously the monetary issue. Find out by yourself why blackjack, for instance, is quite popular with numerous people. You will be more likely to try out the game regularly should you like it.

  26. JasonBy Jason on 6 February, 2014

Where do you see the code at? I just purchased the plugin. Thanks

  27. PabbBy Pabb on 7 February, 2014

Whatever is posted on plugin page is about sub posts .. i’m bit confused about the plugin .. no tutorial .. no docs .. please post the docs about the plugins … is plugin comes with tutorial ?

    • JasonBy Jason on 7 February, 2014

We need a better tutorial then that youtube link. Thanks
