Things to do in Nijmegen

YoastCon is a two-day conference. There’s probably some room for site-seeing sightseeing and more in the oldest city of The Netherlands!

We’d gladly point you to what we think are just some of the highlights of this beautiful city.

Things to see

In random order, you might want to go and see these beautiful buildings and parks in Nijmegen.

Stevenskerk / St. Stephen’s Church

The Great Church or St. Stephen’s Church colloquially called Steven’s Church, is the oldest and largest church in Nijmegen. The church is built on a small hill, the Hundisburg. You can find this beautiful church in the city center, near De Grote Markt.

Valkhof Parc

Dive into a piece of history. This park breathes old times, and on top of that offers a great view over the Waal and the mighty bridge that made the Valkhof such a strategic position in 1944. Located next to it is the Valkhof Museum, for a more in-depth quest into the history of Nijmegen.

Honigfabriek

This old factory is filled with small companies, workshops, places to eat, great coffee and so much more. Located a bit further away from the city center, you might want to reserve some extra time to visit this place of creativity and industrial architecture.

Things to do

Looking for something to do in your spare free hours? There is enough to do close by the venue and hotels we suggested for YoastCon. Here we go:

The old city center of Nijmegen

Wanderlust? Just walk across the street of the venue, and you’ll find yourself crawling through small alleys and larger shopping streets. The cozy, yet complete city center of Nijmegen hosts many shops, over 300 bars, and restaurants.
OH: I’m so looking forward to photographing the old streets of Nijmegen, so be sure to bring your camera!

Muzieum

Nothing to see here, literally. Ever experienced what it is to be blind? This museum has guided tours by blind tour guides, that “show” you what for instance a holiday or everyday life “looks” like when you have poor or no vision. Bring a euro, buy a drink in the dark, get change.

Afrika museum

“The Africa Museum is a museum about people located in the wooded hills of Berg en Dal near Nijmegen.” It’s a bit further away but has both indoor and outdoor exhibits. There is an awesome permanent display of traditional African objects and a large collection of contemporary African art. And it’s really fun for the kids as well, by the way!

Things to eat

Café In De Blauwe Hand

We have to mention the oldest bar in Nijmegen. Not quite as old as the city itself, but this bar is actually open for drinks since 1542 (!). Expect food varying from a range of cheese to barbecue crickets and flammkuchen. If you are planning on visiting the St. Stephen’s Church: it’s located almost next to it.

Bistro Flores

Not for just a quick bite, but to enjoy the good life, good conversations, and good company. Bistro Flores is located near The Valkhof Museum. Expect honest, quality food, with seasonal influences and local products. This is one of my personal favorites in Nijmegen.

Restaurant Wally

One of the places in Nijmegen for a quick burger before, for instance, a Meetup or YoastCon, if you want to get good food and go.  Expect nothing less than burgers ranging from biological cow burgers to seaweed, and black bean burgers.

Brouwerscafe & Restaurant De Hemel

“Come and take a unique look behind the scenes into the oldest craft beer brewery of the Netherlands,” it says on their website. We had our dinner here during the first YoastCon. This is a working brewery that serves really nice food as well. Enjoy a variety of local beers with your food. Cheers!

De Pizzabakkers

Craving for pizza? You could try De Pizzabakkers. Tripadvisor told us it’s the number one pizza place in Nijmegen. Italian wood-fired ovens, thin crusts, and biological deliciousness. No regular soda’s here, by the way. Hip and happening!
