Our second eBook: Content SEO

February 03rd, 2015 – 32 Comments

After we released our first eBook, we felt we were missing one piece of the SEO puzzle too much. While a lot of the blog posts we write about SEO here at Yoast are technical, content SEO has always been at the core of what we do. We just never told that story very well. This time, Marieke and I sat down and put all of our ideas into one, single, structured book on Content SEO.

There are certain benefits to working with your wife, the most important benefit while writing this book is that Marieke understands my thinking, but can put it into words a lot better than I can. The combination of her structured thinking and her knowledge on how to write good content combined with my SEO experience have made this book into what I think is the best book we’ve produced so far.

New illustration style

We’re working on a redesign for yoast.com, and this book is one of the first signals of that change. The illustrations Erwin made are far more functional and descriptive instead of focusing on the writers. Watch how Erwin created the cover of our second eBook in this timelapse video:

You can see some more examples in the preview of the book below:

The three sections of the book

This book has three sections:

  1. Keyword Strategy
Including how to do keyword research, what the purpose of long tail keywords really is and how you can have both a long term keyword strategy and still do ad hoc keyword research.
  2. Site Structure
Explains the importance of a good site structure and how to position your most important pieces of content related to your long tail pieces. Also gives several quick wins on how to improve your overall site structure on an existing site.
  3. Content Writing
Explains how to write well structured, high quality copy that has a clear objective. This section also contains a chapter specific to people using our WordPress SEO plugin on how to incorporate the feedback from the SEO plugin into your writing.

If it wasn’t for finding your website a couple of years ago installing your plugin and following all of your advice – I don’t think my site would have done half as well as it has :) Thank you for that and will read the ebooks with interest. Well done!

Hi, I have read the eBook now twice and I have recommended it by Twitter and all my staff has to read it.
    I have this question:
How das the Sections, categories and cornerstone articles fit together? All of them should be very high in that pyramid. It is a little bit disappointing that exact in this important Question the eBook does not give an answer.
Do you have an example how this 3 are working together?
    Another Question:
If your Blog is the Homepage, how can you speak form pyramid? We know most pages of your site are blogposts. So if the Hompage is the Blog you have on the top some hundred pages? Does not look like a pyramid? Am I wrong?
How do the blogarticles fit in this picture of a pyramid?

    Thx
    Martin

Super psyched to read this, Joost — thrilled you did it & KUDOS! Any chance you might make it available as a print version, though, even if only in PDF form? … Afraid my eyes much prefer print for anything longer than short posts.

    Cheers!

I think the Nook supports both epub and PDF, and you get both formats, so yes.

Wow, incredible concept: “Content SEO.” Such and extraordinary and unique descriptive title! What will they think of next? Before we know it, there will be “Sky Planes” and “Water Boats” and “Road Cars”.

All kidding aside about its lacking title, I’m sure it’s a very informative e-book that brings a lot of value like the rest of your content and products. Congrats.

In my opinion, there are a lot of tools to help you doing a good keyword research for SEO tasks, so i think the most common problem for all of us is how to create a friendly content with a correct structure in order to be well seen for Google at anytime. It’s changing so fast..

    Thanks for your help!

Just bought it and skimmed/ fast read it..
    A good read!
The first pages read like most SEO ebooks (including the better free ones) but after a few pages you notice more depth.
It won’t get too theoretical or strategic, but the way I read it it’s practical, aimed at helping content creators giving their readers true value..

I think this will be a must-read for my team!
