A major update to our Local SEO plugin

A major update to our Local SEO plugin

December 04th, 2013 – 65 Comments

Local SEO pluginToday we’re releasing a major update to our Local SEO plugin, bringing it to version 1.2. This new version has functionality that quite a few of you requested, most important of them is a new store locator option.

Store locator

When you’re a brand that’s sold in several stores throughout a country, continent or even the entire world: you’ll want to tell people where they can buy your product. If you’re the owner of a chain of stores, you’ll want people to be able to easily find where the nearest store is. We’ve made that ridiculously easy.

When you have created multiple locations in your site using our Local SEO plugin, you’ll see a new button:

store locator button

Click on it and you’ll get very fancy store locator functionality. I can write for ages about it, but it’s probably easier if you just try it on our new demo site. That demo site has two stores close to our office and our office in it, typing in a postal code like “6605 PD” or a city like “Nijmegen” will show you how it works. We’ve updated the data to be a bit more international, it now contains Apple store locations in the US, UK and Canada, so type in a city or address in one of those countries to get the best results.

Duplicating locations

Other feedback we got is that people would like to copy data from other locations to be able to more easily set up new locations by copying the data from another location. Well, now you can: just create your new location and in the Local SEO settings you’ll see this:

copy location data

It really is as easy as you’d expect it to be.

Different URLs per location

When you have multiple locations, some of these might actually have their own URL. Up till now, the plugin didn’t allow for that, now it does. With that addition in combination with the store locator, this plugin basically becomes an entire shopping directory solution in its own right…

More changes

Some of the other changes:

  • We’ve added import functionality for the SimpleMap plugin.
  • Support for the new business.business Facebook OpenGraph type.
  • Added a field for a business cellphone number.
  • When you insert a map you now get a nice image of the different map types to help you in choosing the right map type.
  • We’ve improved the way the icons for the different shortcodes are shown in the backend by adding a textual label to them.

Go update! (or go buy it!)

So, if you’re already a user, go update! If you’re not a user yet, go look at our demo site or go buy the plugin now. We’d love to know what you think of the new features in the comments!

Hey Joost, I’ve got a problem:
on two customers hosts (wpengine and 1and1) when using the local seo plugin the widget admin menu won’t work anymore. So I can not open up widget areas and place widgets there. They just won’t slide open. Also ‘help’ and ‘options’ won’t slide down. It works on all other admin pages though.
Any idea what might cause this issue? It does work again when deactivating the (latest version of the) local seo plugin.
    Regards, Sebastian

      Hi Sebastian,

are you 100% sure it’s our plugin? It doesn’t load any JS on the widget screen, so I’m inclined to say it’s probably another plugin that’s causing the trouble…

By Sebastian on 17 December, 2013

        Hello Joost,

at least on wpengine it worked after deactivating the plugin. It could, however, also be the case because another plugin has a conflict with local SEO?!
I made backup points after each plugin activation to see when the error was triggered, but I will deactivate all but the local SEO plugin and see if it still persists. Maybe it really is a conflict with another plugin. I’ll keep you updated. Will test it later today.
        Thank you for your response.
        Regards, Sebastian

How many locations will this support? I’m hoping to use WordPress for a Church Locator site that would list over 10,000 churches eventually. What’s the functional limit?

Is there a way to use this plugin for a business that does not have a actual “brick and mortar” location? However, they still want to attract customers in a local geographic area and come up well in search results. There are many businesses that fit this need. Freelancers that work from home, insurance agents with a home office who visit the client but don’t have the client visit them, a handyman, yard maintenance companies, etc. They use a post office box for their mail but they don’t want customers coming to that location because they don’t have a regular “store”. Thanks.

Still wondering if you have any tips or suggestions regarding my question. I’ve got clients who want to rank locally but not post an actual address. Do you see a way to use your plugin for that? Only entering the City or Cities but not a street address?

      • Arjan Snaterse
By Arjan Snaterse on 17 December, 2013

        Hi Charlene,

To rank in Google you always must have a physical location. Without a physical address you aren’t able to create a entry in Google Places.

You can enter a service area, but this is always to support your physical location, not to replace it.

So, unfortunately there’s not really an solution if you don’t want to display your address. That’s not just for our plugin, but if don’t have a physical address in Google Places you will never going to rank (well).

        Hi Charlene,

we don’t have a solution for companies with a service area yet, to be honest. We’re pondering that one…

    Hey Joost,

I am a real novice when it comes to SEO but for my new site i have accidently bought a PR expired domain. Was shocked but then thought lets give the domain a try. So i did all the basic stuff even installed your wordpress SEO. Now there are some issues –
    1. the old pages of the domain are still indexed and show the old expired meta and not the new ones that i have set.
    2. I have submitted the sitemap to GWT – url.com/sitemap_index.xml, but after it is processed, the child sitemap do not show any indexed urls for that matter.
So should i delete this expired PR domain and buy a virgin domain or can we work on this as well.
    Your advise is seriously needed.

Nice job Joost! Glad to see your team just keeps working to make all of these awesome SEO plugins better. I have been hesitant to purchase this one, even though I have all of your other ones, as I felt we already had this part covered and we had a bit more control. It looks like you have definitely made this more useful, especially with the unique URL for each location feature. Thank you!

Hmm. OK. I have it installed on quite a few sites (not quite 20). I’ve logged into all of them and they’re all still at version 1.0 with no option/alert to update/upgrade.

        • Joost de Valk
By Joost de Valk on 10 December, 2013

That’s weird, we have had some updates where updating itself was broken in the initial installs. You can go to https://yoast.com/support/licenses/ and resend yourself the purchase email. That’ll give you a download link with the latest version in it.

  28. Marc D
    By Marc D on 9 December, 2013

It’s a great improvements of plugin. However, it seems we need a high specification of Hosting serer for this, like I saw on your local demo. So , are there any recommended specifications related to this plugin for hosting servers?

    • Joost de Valk
By Joost de Valk on 9 December, 2013

The problems we were having are actually not related to hosting, but to the Google Maps API only allowing 2500 requests a day. That’ll be *plenty* for most sites but not for everyone, so we’re working on a fix for that were you can add an API key.

    Hi Team Yoast:

I remember seeing this topic addressed somewhere at some point, but can’t locate where.

So here’s the questions: I’m wondering whether you recommend manufacturers use the plugin to show all the retailers that carry their product. Technically, the stores are not owned by the manufacturer, but they do carry their product.

Can you give me pros and cons and a final summary thought on the matter?

    Many thanks. You guys rock.

    • Arjan Snaterse
By Arjan Snaterse on 5 December, 2013

Sure, you can easily use the plugin for this case.

Remember: ranking in local search itself will be harder, since you don’t own the stores, but you can always use it as a powerful and user friendly tool for your visitors.
