Recipient:
Allyson Souza

Nominated by:
Felipe Santos

Meet Allyson Souza, a cherished member of the WordPress Community Team! His dedication and valuable contributions to the community are the very reason why Felipe Santos nominated him for the Yoast Care fund. Let’s get to know this passionate WordPress enthusiast a bit better.

Nominator Felipe Santos: “Allyson has always been one of the most trusted and helpful contributors to the WordPress Brazilian community. He’s always open to help. He helps the local community as a GTE and has organized several meetups and WordCamps in São Paulo. I believe it would be a good moment to share some appreciation for everything he does for our team.

Let’s get to know Allyson Souza

That’s quite an introduction, Felipe! We would love to get to know Allyson even better. That’s why we asked him some questions about his work and his passion for WordPress:

Hi, Allyson! What do you do?

Currently, I’m working as a Senior Web Developer at NextPress, and I’m also an active member of the local WordPress Brazilian community. I’ve contributed to the community in several ways, such as organizing meetups and WordCamp in the local WordPress São Paulo community, being a GTE (Global Translation Editor) for pt-BR, and helping as a local forum moderator.

Why did you start contributing? Could you share your first contribution with us?

In 2013, I was developing my company’s website and had several questions, which the community on the forum and social media addressed with great care and detail. I was really impressed with how generously people helped a total stranger.

Then, at my first WordCamp, I met some organizers who invited me to join the organizing team because they needed more hands. That’s when I started contributing.

What contribution or moment are you most proud of?

I never did anything alone, so I want to emphasize that everything I’m proud of is shared with my very competent friends. My proudest moment was in WordCamp São Paulo in 2019: we achieved our peak of attendees with approximately 700 people. We enabled about 20 elementary school students to participate in a site creation workshop, and greatly improved the attendees’ and speakers’ diversity (compared to other years). In conclusion, we delivered a high-quality event that rivals any big flagship WordCamp.

What would you love to do in the future?

I would love to be fully dedicated to open source. Still, I expect to keep and increase my contributions, and save some of my time for education, which I believe is critical to introducing newcomers to the community.

Where may people find you? Online, WordCamps, other meetups?

You can find me on social media, WordPress Brazilian Slack, and in person at São Paulo meetups.

Thank you for this interview, Allyson, and for all of your contributions to the WordPress community! Do you know someone like Allyson Souza who also deserves to be in the spotlight? Go to our Yoast Care page and nominate them right away.
