Change of pricing / licensing for Video SEO plugin

As of last night, a license for our Video SEO plugin has become $20 cheaper for what’s probably about 90% of our customers. While doing an analysis over the holidays of what we’d sold and how much time we spent supporting people, we found that people using the plugin on multiple sites were bound to ask more questions (I know, it’s not exactly rocket science). The vast majority of people only use the plugin on one site, so reducing it in price for those people made sense, while charging more for people using it on more sites seemed reasonable.

So we now offer 3 licenses to the plugin, much in the same way as Gravity Forms and Easy Digital Downloads extensions work:

  • personal, for a single site at $69;
  • professional, for up to 5 sites at $129;
  • agency, for unlimited sites at $249.

Yoast_avatar_Thijs_defEveryone who has bought the plugin at the old price of $89 is in luck: your license is and will remain unlimited. We will use the same pricing model for our upcoming Local SEO module.

By the way, if you’ve emailed our support email address, you might have “met” the new addition to our team: my little brother Thijs. He handles most basic support questions, while bugs and other stuff get assigned to me. All of our support is handled through email for now, for which we use, and absolutely love, HelpScout, if you handle a lot of email you should really check them out. We’re currently working on opening a support forum as well, if you’ve bought the plugin you’ll get more details on that as we roll it out.

We’re planning more improvements to our infrastructure as well as ramping up big time for the launch of a few more plugins, so make sure you subscribe to the newsletter and stay up to date!

I’ve wanted to make use of this since it was launched but I just couldn’t afford the $99 price tag. Now that it’s $69 for a single licence I think I’ll be able to justify the payment to try it out.

Will there be licence upgrades model made available so I could upgrade a single licence to agency if I chose to deploy the plugin network wide?

    • Joost de ValkBy Joost de Valk on 8 January, 2013

      Hey William,

good point, yes we’ll allow you to upgrade your license, don’t know how we’ll do that technically yet but we’ll figure that out :)

Now I really regret putting off buying the plugin till today!

    • Joost de ValkBy Joost de Valk on 8 January, 2013

Well or you’re happy about it because you just saved yourself $20 :)

      • Daniel McClureBy Daniel McClure on 8 January, 2013

        Not if I manage 27 sites :P

      • Daniel McClureBy Daniel McClure on 9 January, 2013

Bought it reluctantly. Every other WordPress company I know that licenses products gives at least a weeks warning before raising prices which boosts their sales and gets people excited to make a purchase. Instead you’ve shocked people into buying within a 24 hour period using a discount code that still costs double the price as of two days ago and dangled the carrot of lifetime licenses maybe disappearing in the near future. It all just leaves a bad taste when this could have been a great PR/marketing opportunity that rewarded and respected your loyal followers instead.

        • Joost de ValkBy Joost de Valk on 9 January, 2013

Well Daniel, sorry to see that you feel you have to out that yet another time. As I made clear already, this is a price drop for 90% of our customers, I can’t do it right for everyone.

  3. StefanoBy Stefano on 8 January, 2013

I knew I shouldve bought it last week.. damn it lol

    • Joost de ValkBy Joost de Valk on 8 January, 2013

Well… You know what I want to say ;)

  4. Joost de ValkBy Joost de Valk on 8 January, 2013

Ok for those of you who’ve been wanting to buy it and need a bigger license, use 20PERCENT as a discount code when entering your details and you’ll get 20% off, valid today and tomorrow!

    • James spencerBy James spencer on 13 January, 2013

When is it available? and how to know about the discounts and updates ?

  5. David GadarianBy David Gadarian on 8 January, 2013

Hi Joost. Quick question – are the licenses lifetime or annual in terms updates and support?

    Thanks

    • Joost de ValkBy Joost de Valk on 8 January, 2013

They’re lifetime, for now ;) (which mostly means that if you buy it now, it’s lifetime, but that might not be true for future sales if we decide to change it)

  6. John-PierreBy John-Pierre on 8 January, 2013

Fair enough to ask more if used on more sites, but this is a lot more.
    1) Does support remain for the email address used to buy the license or is that changed with this?
    2) Can the license be upgrades, let’s say buy the personal license first and once you get to a second site go to professional by paying the difference and the same when you need it on 6+ sites?
    Thanks
    JP

    • John-PierreBy John-Pierre on 9 January, 2013

Hello Joost, can you please also reply to my questions? Thanks!

  7. Kyle ClouseBy Kyle Clouse on 9 January, 2013

Hey Yoast, what if you’ve already purchased two separate licensees for two separate sites? Can I somehow get one change to allow usage on more sites?

    • Joost de ValkBy Joost de Valk on 9 January, 2013

yes, email pluginsupport by responding to the sales email and we’ll fix it for you.

  8. IsaacBy Isaac on 9 January, 2013

I was seating on the fence to buy the plugin for my sites and now you upped the price dramatically.
I think you should have have given a “warning” or at least offer a grace period of having the multi-site license for .
I know it would have gotten me “off the fence”.
Now, as it stands I can’t justify spending $200 on a plugin even if it’s yours :)

    cheers

  9. Joost de ValkBy Joost de Valk on 9 January, 2013

Sorry to hear that but you have to understand that for most people, this is an improvement and the $89 price tag for what’s apparently a lot of installs was a mistake on my end.

    • IsaacBy Isaac on 9 January, 2013

I totally see the value here and if this is your price then let it be it. I am sure you thought about it long and hard.
All I am saying is that a “heads up” or some sort of 48 hour “fire sale” would have been smart and actually get you many sales even though it was for a “lesser” price.

      • JohnBy John on 10 January, 2013

I agree. I wish I bought the unlimited one the other day. It was on the order page and I didn’t get around to buying it. I agree with you, Isaac. A 48 hour sale or warning would have been great. I guess making 90% of the people happy is the main thing. Now I’m going to wait and think if it’s worth a $200+ investment for all the sites I wanted to use it on. :( what about $89 unlimited with a limit of times we use tech support and charge for tech support after that?

        • ThomasBy Thomas on 20 January, 2013

I would also appreciate a model like that. Especially because I was not reading a single comment here, written by the happy 90%. I have 32 sites, most of them are microsites to a certain topic, but they´re are all mine. So with my multisite install I don´t think that I would ask more questions or would need more support than a regular user without technical knowledge! So saying I also don´t believe that agencies with a great technical knowledge bothering the support too much. Maybe more the “self-proclaimed” Webdesigners aka. “Nephew designers”. Well, I will wait for another discount then!

          • Joost de ValkBy Joost de Valk on 20 January, 2013

Don’t hold your breath :-) I’m not kidding: likeliness of pricing changing again anytime soon are very close to 0.

  10. Mark LewisBy Mark Lewis on 9 January, 2013

Thanks for looking out for your customer base…some companies are just so greedy and see the $$$ and fail to cater to their customers. I’m sure you’ll get more sales/customers from this price drop :)

  11. Kevin MuldoonBy Kevin Muldoon on 9 January, 2013

Wish I knew this price change was coming as I’m looking for an unlimited license. Some people may have seen a price drop of $20 but I’ve seen an increase of $160.

    With regards to the plugin:

    * Does the plugin apply the benefits to previous posts that have been published?
    * How long does it take to index all videos?
    * What sort of SEO benefits are users getting with this – i.e. are they seeing a 10% jump in traffic, 20% jump?

  12. DallasBy Dallas on 10 January, 2013

Wow, seriously disappointed I waited till today to buy it – I need the developer version which is now way too expensive. I was totally up for buying the $89 plan but I’ll put it on the backburner.
    Ouch!

    • JohnBy John on 10 January, 2013

I’m putting it on the back burner now too, Dallas. I had it on the checkout page on my browser at the old price, didn’t check out and not see it’s gone up a ton for the unlimited. I’m totally bummed. :(

    • Zorro....By Zorro.... on 26 January, 2013

Wow I just read this about the developer version. Come on Yoast your not giving a price drop if you give it on one side and take it from another:-( Think SMART… Work on volume like Wallmart it is a digital product and east to do.

    Hi Joost,

I am getting the same ‘discount invalid’ error when cutting and pasting 20PERCENT into the discount field.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

I just love the Video SEO plugin! Works great for my portfolio.
Hope to see more plugins. $249 is much but it is worth it. Hope this helps you to develop more exciting plugins for wordpress.

  15. Ken SoszkaBy Ken Soszka on 13 January, 2013

Hi, I’m a bit disappointed that I just paid for a product and the support forum has no place to login, and using the contact form on the site says up to 72 hours for a reply. Some of my videos are not being recognized by the plugin. I paid for it, and the time that I have available to work on my site will be gone by the time I get a response. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance!

    • Joost de ValkBy Joost de Valk on 13 January, 2013

      Hi Ken,

The support forum is brand new, you’ll get access somewhere in the coming weeks. In the meantime, you can just reply to your purchase email (as is stated clearly in there btw) and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can. We are in a different time zone though, so please understand that it takes some time!

      • Ken SoszkaBy Ken Soszka on 13 January, 2013

Thanks for your prompt reply Joost! Yes, sorry, I see that now in the purchase email. It is in the last line, after the link to the support forum, so I never got to it before trying the forum. You might want to remove that support forum link from everywhere until it is live, to avoid annoyed people like me :-). I’ll look forward to the reply to my email.

        • Ken SoszkaBy Ken Soszka on 16 January, 2013

Okay all set now, thanks Joost! It is working great as of yesterday, after your help and the most recent update to the plugin. Much appreciated!!

  17. Thomas PickardBy Thomas Pickard on 15 January, 2013

I emailed Yoast about actually being able to preview at least a minute or two of one of the videos, so I actually had some idea of what I may be paying for.

    Never did receive a response…

    • Joost de ValkBy Joost de Valk on 15 January, 2013

Email from non-clients very often doesn’t get a response from us just because we get SO much of it, sorry… We don’t allow you to test but we do have a no questions asked money back guarantee for a month.

For single buy its ok, but for multi-sites its kinda hard to spend 200+ bucks in single basket

    • Joost de ValkBy Joost de Valk on 16 January, 2013

If it’s not worth it for you, don’t do it, it’s that simple :)

      I *know* it’s worth it though :)

  20. MarkBy Mark on 19 January, 2013

Hey there. I see the up in price which I kind of get the logic behind – but as a subscriber to your site I totally missed the news if it was sent out that way. I manage lots of sites and love your SEO plugin. Video SEO was a next step for me – the pricing however is a bit too high IMHO – I have Grav Forms developer at $199 but that is for a suite of products – also there is the itheme dev suite which is $199 for a lot of plugins.

The Video SEO is just that, one thing – video SEO ;o) Forgive me if I too think the rise so quickly was a bit of a shock especially so under-publicised. So this is why I feel that the price hike is a bit much. ;(

Anyway, rant over – why dont I just deal with it – after all the value your FREE plugin has added to my sites is amazing – so really my comments were more about the limited time to react than they are about the price.

    Keep up the great work.

  21. Zorro....By Zorro.... on 26 January, 2013

Very happy to hear this…..! Only reason I did not buy or recommend to customers too..

  22. Zorro....By Zorro.... on 26 January, 2013

While I just finished reading some other comments and don’t think you should have upped the dev version to compensate for the lower cost single license I would like to ask however if there will be an upgraded path to from single user to higher level version.

I honestly been hesitant to use it because of price and not enough data showing the results of the product. Yes you have have results but you have an extreme authority site that has take a while to get where it is. But I think myself and others would like to see more data from others as to how well this really works on the average site. I hear a lot of Buzz about Video being where it is for SEO but honestly don’t see you using video a lot in your blog nor enough feedback to justify time spent playing around with this. I am perfectly ok with you putting my foot in my mouth and show me differently and I will become a believer.

Oh and one more thing do you have an affiliate program so others can get a crack at making a little change promoting the product if the product turns out to be a winner? Remember you gotta share if you wanna make more. Everyone knows this with affiliate marketing is where traffic is in addition to SEO.

    • Ken SoszkaBy Ken Soszka on 26 January, 2013

Hi, I would like to say that this plugin is worth every penny and more. Honestly I can’t believe that people are complaining. If you are familiar with the free Yoast SEO plugin, and how easy it is to use and how great it works, this add-on for video is a no-brainer. If you don’t think you can make your money back many times over on a developers license, by making sites for clients with great SEO, you’re doing something wrong in my opinion. I bought it about 12 days ago, and added a video to my blog. I used the new video plugin and followed the suggestions, just like the regular video plugin. My video is getting Google search hits, more every day, and is rising in the search results for the keywords that I targeted. Even though it is not quite to the first page of search results yet, it gets hits because it stands out among the other results, due to the video thumbnail. Also, if you click “video” at the top of Google search it is #2 on the list of videos. Talk about value… Nice work Joost.

  24. Zorro....By Zorro.... on 27 January, 2013

I like what I am hearing. Would still like to see more studies. Its not a lot of money or risk. But it is time to try. However, it does come from a very reputable source.

I am Almost sold. I have however, been reviewing a couple other possible solutions for video and been on the fence for a project I am about to kick off that is going to have a lot of video in it.

For example I with your product I can leverage SEO for YOUTube videos. Could even be videos that are not mine even better. Although I am wondering how well a video in YouTune already may rank. But there is value either way.

What I am seeing it lacks is a little more flexibility and still maintain SEO for example to have the ability to gallerias and such.

In addition I have another product that is actually a complete system that allows me to stream self made videos from Amazon S3 cloud. Was more money but honestly not that much more and allows me to do all kinds of cool embedding call to action boxes with links and Facebook likes ect. of video including video SEO.

However, what I do not like about the product I have already is it does not allow me to leverage YouTube and with SEO.

I think both have their place. Having YouTube SEO is good as it helps the overall views on YouTube an we all know this helps ranking there. But I also don’t want to loose traffic over to YouTube so I am wondering how much control the player has in Yoast Video SEO.

  25. SvenBy Sven on 1 February, 2013

    Hi Yoast,

just a quick question for the “unlimited” license. I read on the introduction post that we can use it for client sites, but
support is limited to the original purchaser. I understand that and I am totally cool with it. Question is if I can sell a site including the plugin. I do custom work and maintainance for customers and have own projects, but from time to time I get rid of one or two. So do I have to remove the plugin if I sell one of my own projects or not? Thanks for clarification and best from China
