News SEO 2.0: Google News optimization with ease

news seoWe’ve rebuilt and reimagined our News SEO plugin and taken it to the next level. Today we’re proud to release News SEO version 2.0, which allows you to easily optimize your site for Google News.

It had been, unfortunately, almost 2 years since we last updated the plugin which meant it didn’t work anymore for 95% of people and lacked many features. We’ve decided to make it a premium product, much like our Local SEO and Video SEO plugins, so we can actually afford to spend time on it. As always, our core WordPress SEO plugin (to which this News SEO plugin is an addon) is and will remain free of charge. Of course this plugin can also be used with our Premium WordPress SEO plugin.

What does our News SEO plugin do?

The News SEO plugin allows you to optimize your site for Google News. It creates XML News Sitemaps, editors picks RSS feeds and allows for use of the standout tag and the meta news_keywords tag as well as helping you optimize some of the more advanced XML News sitemap options like stock tickers.

Of course, you have to be in Google News first to be able to optimize for it, which is why I’ve taken the time to write a page outlining the Google News submission process. Not all sites qualify for Google News, but for those that do, it can be a very powerful source of traffic.

Universal Search

One of the most important reasons that Google News can lead to so much traffic is because it’s included in Google’s Universal Search results. A search for [mh370] in Google, for instance, will currently show something like this:

mh370 google search - news seo at work

Those first 3 results are taken directly from Google News, as is the image. As you can imagine, this can drive quite a bit of traffic on current affairs as well as celebrity names, sports clubs etc.

If your site is included in Google News and you run our WordPress SEO plugin, buying this extension should be a no-brainer. If you’re in Google News, your site runs on WordPress and you’re not using our WordPress SEO plugin… Well, shame on you :)

Now, you can go buy the News SEO plugin right, or read some more first.

This plugin up to now was free kind of add-on for best seo plugin out there. Now it has been turned into another juicing machine. Does everything going commercial now at Yoast company?

    Regards, Lukas

while I understand your concern, you have to understand that if we hadn’t gone premium, this plugin would NOT have been updated. We simply can’t afford to have that many freely available plugins out there and keep updating them when we’re not making money.

Hi Mr Joost, thanks for quick response. I appreciate your input on this.
I see the point of going premium with plugin development take over and such. But it seems now every plugin from Yoast is premium now – add them up and it is getting big numbers for a simple local sites. I know it is totally up to you choosing your business model and such – and I fully respect that.
But it just simply feels little sad seeing so many things in the WP community goes commercial. Just my 2 sour cents on this.

Well Lukas, I think you’re wrong. We just last month did the biggest update to WordPress SEO since its initial release. And that plugin is still free. We also released a free Convert plugin recently. I just don’t agree with the sentiment.

The basic “rule” I have now is this: if it’s a product everyone would benefit from, we’d make it free. If it’s “niche”, it’ll become premium. Easy does it!

            Beste Joost,

    Hi there,

just installed the plugin but I am experiencing the following problem: I cannot save any option in the News SEO dashboard. None filling in the blank fields nor ticking the box related to post types.

Anything I inserted just doesn’t appear even though after clicking on Save I got the message “options saved”

Is this normal? Bug in the plugin?

      Hi Roberto,

that bug should’ve been fixed for you already :)

        Hi Joost,

        now it works perfectly! Thanks!

Unfortunately we stille have a problem with the “Google News Genre” section in the article page editor. It doesn’t save the genre we select. All the other options work properly.

So: you can’t include your Google news sitemap before you are approved by Google. But, to be approved by Google your article url must be permanent, unique, and contain at least 3 digits. So, we turn in circle and the plugin helps only if you are already in Google News.

By Joost de Valk on 22 April, 2014

You can include your Google News sitemap before being in G News. I don’t know why you’d think you couldn’t? :)

By trustman on 22 April, 2014

        You are so fast :))

How? In the form use it to submit your site, you can’t. I can go to Google Webmaster. But Google say: Please note that you may receive errors if you submit your sitemap before your site has been reviewed and approved by our team.

        Thank you.

Is hard to get in google news, ….this is only for big corp….no for small bloguers..

    • Joost de Valk
By Joost de Valk on 24 April, 2014

Well you have to be a serious news organization, but that doesn’t mean it’s “hard”. It’s indeed not really interesting for small time, single bloggers.

well,,i i agree at some poit with you..but small bloguers like me need the oportunity to get big,,and move to the next step… you move on, if you dont have the change to move up..?

What do you mean that the old news seo plugins is not working now? I’ve got it installed on a couple of sites and it works just fine. Is there an issue that I should be aware of or does it not work on the latest version? Right now, the sites that are running it haven’t been updated to the new version of WP or WordPress Seo, but if you are saying that the plugin will not work after I update then that is pretty significant.

Why not have a free version as well and maybe ask for an email or to rate the plugin to get the download? There are plenty of small blogs that would like to use the plugin but just can’t afford to pay for something that they can get for free elsewhere.

It breaks all the time and yes, with 1.5 it’s completely broken. You might not like our decisions, but otherwise we would’ve completely deprecated the plugin.

The PayPal option does not generate a PayPal CART to check out from, instead goes to the Credit Card Form Fields.

Looks like a great plugin and would definitely increase visibility in the search results. Great price for a full year also. I don’t understand why people complain about the cost so much. These plugins take a lot of time and effort to keep updated.

I just bought the plugin and have one question: right now, post tags are added to meta news_keywords automatically. Is it possible to turn that off?

    • Barry Kooij
By Barry Kooij on 2 May, 2014

The tags only get added in the XML sitemap, not in the head meta tag. The XML sitemap have not limit on keywords.
