Let’s get to know Satyam Vishwakarma

Those are some lovely words by Makarand. Let’s get to know Satyam a bit better and ask him some questions about his work and passion for WordPress:

Hi Satyam! How did you first discover WordPress, and why did you start contributing?

My journey with WordPress began in 2020 when I transitioned from Blogger, seeking more flexibility for my growing blog. While I initially focused on learning the platform, my true introduction to the WordPress community came in 2023 through X and the UnderRepresentedInTech group. This connection led me to Post Status, where I found an incredibly supportive network.

Through Post Status, I had the opportunity to attend WordCamp Bhopal 2023, thanks to generous sponsorships from Corey Maass, Alan Fuller, MediaRon LLC, Nabin Jaiswal, and Jenni. Experiencing firsthand how the community came together to support individuals like me deepened my passion for WordPress and open-source collaboration.

From that moment, I never looked back. I started actively contributing to WordPress through Community, Marketing (now Media Corps), Photos, Polyglots, and Training, eventually becoming a Core Contributor in WordPress 6.5. My contributions go beyond code – they’re about fostering inclusivity, empowering others, and giving back to the ecosystem that has transformed my journey.

This year, my focus is on strengthening community building by supporting and mentoring new and emerging WordPress communities through volunteering and contributions. I want to help create more inclusive spaces where people, especially newcomers, feel empowered to participate, connect, and grow within the ecosystem.

Additionally, I aim to contribute to PHP and its broader community, bringing together various CMSs built on PHP to elevate WordPress’s role within the ecosystem. By collaborating beyond WordPress, I want to help raise the bar, ensuring that WordPress continues to lead and evolve as the most powerful and accessible CMS built on PHP.

What advice would you give to someone just starting with WordPress?

Start with the basics – explore how WordPress works, experiment with themes, plugins, and the block editor, and build something real like a blog, portfolio, or business site. Hands-on experience is the best way to learn.

To gain structured knowledge, visit Learn WordPress – a free learning platform with lesson plans, tutorials, and workshops created by industry experts. It’s one of the best resources for learning WordPress at your own pace.

Engage with the WordPress community – join Meetups, forums, and WordCamps to connect with others and find support. Most importantly, stay curious and keep learning, as WordPress is constantly evolving, opening doors to endless opportunities.

Who is your WordPress hero?

For me, Michelle Frechette is a true WordPress hero. Her dedication to community building, inclusivity, and advocacy for underrepresented voices in tech has made a significant impact on the WordPress ecosystem. Through her work with UnderRepresentedInTech, Post Status, and various WordPress initiatives, she has empowered countless individuals to find their place in the community.

Beyond Michelle, I also admire the unsung heroes of WordPress – contributors, organizers, and volunteers who dedicate their time to making WordPress better. Their passion and commitment to open-source software inspire me every day.

What’s one WordPress project you wish you had more time for?

I wish I had more time to support and mentor underrepresented and underprivileged communities, including students and professionals who want to step into the WordPress ecosystem and the broader tech world. Helping these individuals find opportunities, access resources, and build their confidence within the community is something I’m deeply passionate about.

Additionally, I’d love to contribute more towards PHP and its intersection with WordPress, fostering collaboration between different CMSs built on PHP. Strengthening WordPress’s presence in the broader PHP ecosystem can open new doors for aspiring developers and ensure a more inclusive future for open-source.
