Video SEO plugin video

October 10th, 2012 – 51 Comments

I’ve been very hard at work with the Video SEO plugin, adding support for the most used video embed plugins for WordPress. See the changelog for specifics. The plugin is, I’m proud to say, selling well and people seem to be loving it. I’m also working on another project with the guys from Video User Manuals and they, very kindly, made a video for the Video SEO plugin that I just had to share with you as it shows just how easy the plugin is to use:

You can of course still buy the plugin, you can go ahead and do that here.

    Hello Joost,
I’m very interested in this new plugin but since I don’t see any money back guarantee stated anywhere on your page I want to be sure I’ll be able to use it first. My theme is U-Design and I use Easy Video Player. I noticed others have asked if your plugin will support EVP but the response isn’t clear. You asked for a link in a previous reply so here’s what’s I found inside the html code…
The video can be found at my page
I hope that helps. Please let me know if I will be able to use your plugin with Easy Video Player. BTW, I already use your “Yoast WordPress SEO” plugin and I love it so I do want to purchase your new Video SEO plugin.

Is getting authorship with google linked up with my video posts helpful for the video seo? (ie you video plug in) or is it just helpful for content posts?

Very neat plug in. I will have to give it a spin since video snippets are usually quite the pain to manually create.

Hello Joost. Need instruction. I sent a couple emails using my proper licensing email to ask you a question and havent heard from you. Is there any more proper way to get a question answered? I am the guy that asked about using plugin for homepage video, not page/post. If not s there a work around for it?
BTW- this guy Juristenkantoor cut and pasted my question as his own. That wasnt me under alias. I’m a respectful customer looking for a straight answer.

Hey, sorry to hear that, must have missed that as I usually answer those emails straight away :)

There is no workaround currently I’m afraid, how are you embedding the video? Where is it stored?

Joost, Is the plugin useful for webmasters that use 3rd party video hosting such as YouTube?

Thanks Joost very informative video demo, I’ve had some great results with the WordPress Seo plugin and has made my life so much easier when doing on-page seo.

I’m very interested to test out the Video Seo Plugin, now I just need to create some worthy video content to experiment with.

Just bought the Video SEO plugin and installed it and applied license. Everything seems to be installed and set up correctly; however, posts where I have Vimeo video embedded, I’m not seeing the video in Snippet Preview nor the “Video” tab in WordPress SEO by Yoast section. I’ve tried testing on existing new pages/posts. Can’t get it to work!

Yeah…still waiting for a reply. I’ve tried commented in multiple places and I’ve sent a message through your contact form. I’ve completedly uninstalled and reinstalled the Video SEO plugin several times with no luck. Plugin does not seem to be picking up any of my youtube or jwplayer videos in posts or pages. Please provide some support here!

James, could you drop me an email by replying to the purchase email, as stated in there? :) the email you used to comment doesn’t have a valid video seo license attached to it, so I need to know what email you used for buying the plugin.

By James on 28 October, 2012

Who actually reads confirmation emails ;) Your contact page says “I’m sorry but I can’t handle plugin support via email.”

Anyways, I resolved this issue finally after a few more reinstalls and using IE instead of Chrome for the install. Not sure what the problem was.

I do have another issue though with jw player shortcode embed, so I’ll reply to the conf email for that. Thanks.

Do you thing it is “smart” to create a video for a lot of content pages, jus to get the video thumb in Google for increased CTR?

I’m considering to do this, but it will be a lot of work….but might be worth it..

    • Joost de Valk
By Joost de Valk on 28 October, 2012

      Hey Menno,

don’t add too much content around video’s or Google might deem it “not a video” and not show a video snippet.

I’m using a video premium template for wordpress, detube.
I enter my video url slightly differently in the theme, is there a way to get the plugin to look at that url instead of in the body of the post ? (or make the url in the body of the post invisible)
Also, how do I get the plugin to work with self-hosted material ?

Most of the pages on which I placed a video are still not showing in the serps with the thumbnail. Is there a specific place to place the video within the post for it to get a thumbnail?

Hi – I have this plugin and of course the other but am running in to a few problems now. Both plugins are generating 404 pages when trying to view site map pages, is it a case of changing permissions? Also when adding videos they do not show up in the snippet as talked about in the video above, is this because of the site map issue??

    Hello Yoast,
Will there every be a version of the Video SEO Plugin that does not require your WordPress SEO plugin?
I don’t question your WordPress SEO plugin, I am just using another one and it is working better for me though I would like to try your video seo plugin.
    Thanks in advance

No, sorry. The video plugin relies heavily on APIs built in to my WP SEO plugin for opengraph and for XML Sitemap generation.

The following code will not include this video in my sitemap, however if I use Iframe it does. I was told that Google doesn’t search iframe and I should use the old embed code.

  21. Joshua Stern
By Joshua Stern on 20 October, 2012

I was informed to use the old embed code for Vimeo because Google didn’t spider the method. Therefore, I included the following
    ” ”

and this plugin does not add it to its sitemap. However, it does include it if I use the method.

    Thank you.

This looks great! Before I buy, I do have a question. My videos are hosted on YouTube. They play in a video lightbox, via the WP-video-lightbox plug in. They are directly referenced, as follows: href=”″ rel=”wp-video-lightbox (…..)

Will your plug in work in this case?

  29. Jacobus
By Jacobus on 14 October, 2012

I am about to buy, but I have one small question. In the Vimeo video you refer to, the path to the video is put in the post. I guess it also works for embedded videos of YouTube, but I just want to make sure, as I have several websites where I have only embedded YouTube videos. Hope to hear from you soon.

    Hi Joost,

Most of the pages on which I placed a video are still not showing in the serps with the thumbnail. Is there a specific place to place the video within the post for it to get a thumbnail?

Can it be at the end of the post, after all or most of the text?

Hi Joost. I just bought this plugin, installed it and did a re index. While it did detect all the on site videos and youtube embedded. It did not create a sitemap. When I hit the view sitemap, it just took me to my home page. I confirmed also with filezilla. no sitemap was created.

I have another issue. It is breaking my theme layout. I am using Heatmap pro.

It breaks the layout in categories and posts. Throws the sidebar to the bottom.
Each post that just has the jwplayer self hosted it throws in these characters in the post “>
I deactivate the plugin then everything is fine.

Hello Joost. First – some quick patronage…. I am a relative newbee in the WP world, but only develop sites and solutions for this space. I have enjoyed reading your posts and related works – for me its been a master’s degree in WordPress! Now to my question – since this plugin is designed to support one video per page / post, how does it work when the video is displayed in a WP sidebar?

    thanks in advance!

    • Neil Heird
By Neil Heird on 30 October, 2012

Hello again Joost. I originally posted this question on Oct 11 and haven’t heard back yet, so please forgive the repost here….

If a video is enbedded within a sidebar, how does the plugin help a page to rank for the video? and by extention, if a common sidebar appears on more than one page, does this impact the plugin’s work? or should we just stick to pages and posts, leaving sidebars for other content?

      • Joost de Valk
By Joost de Valk on 30 October, 2012

Within a sidebar the plugin doesn’t work, as the video could be on multiple pages and XML video sitemaps don’t allow for that. So your videos should be in one page.

What’s the rating field for? Why would we not rate our own videos a 5? ;)

    • Joost de Valk
By Joost de Valk on 10 October, 2012

Hey Matt, good question :) it’s mostly there because I want to allow other plugins to hook into that, for instance if you had a rating plugin for your posts, that could hook into that value…
