Redesign and more :)

yoast redesignYoast keeps changing and growing in many, many ways. One of those is a redesign, which is now live. We’re finally using the theme framework we’ve been recommending to others for ages: StudioPress’ Genesis. We used an external developer for most of the development, just because I’m too pressed for time myself and didn’t want this to wait. His name is Bill Erickson and he comes highly recommended, he’s been an absolute pleasure to work with.

I hope you like it, a longer story on the how and why of this will come soon, as we make sure we’ve fixed all small bugs.

Other changes at Yoast

But there’s more… While we work on the new design, we can also tell you that we’ve actually hired a part-time designer, who’ll be joining us September 1st to start out several new projects. We’re excited to have her on board but we won’t tell you more than that just yet!

Related to that I have finally convinced my wife that I need her in the company too, to head up our research “department” (she’s a Ph. D. in criminology/sociology). While she will continue to teach and do research at Avans, she will also be helping us out with a research project, for which an intern will be starting soon as well.

One more thing…

Video SEO! It’s like, ready. We’re hard at work preparing documentation and the necessary infrastructure, but the plugin will go on sale within the next few weeks.

That’s it for now, enjoy the new design and make sure you subscribe to the newsletter so we can keep you up to date.

Very nice redesign, I love it!
You footer’s sitemap link is still missing though ;)

I’ve mixed feelings about Genesis after a very brief look at it this week but think Yoast looks great! Maybe I should give Genesis another look…

I want to move my site from Thesis and can’t decide between Woo Canvas and Genesis. AS a non-developer it is so confusing. Woo looks like it is good for a non-techie, but from my limited understanding the friendly interface adds database queries, meaning slower load time. Or I could be wrong. Would be curious to know why you have mixed feelings. Thanks.

Great design Joost! Came across a bunch of 404′s & missing content, but I’m guessing that’s still work in progress..

    Keep it up!

  20. MikeBy Mike on 15 August, 2012

    Great redesign.

We’ve been using Genesis for a couple years with superb results. Easy updating, good security and SEO benefits (though admittedly it’s the ONLY thing we’ve used…so there’s not really a comparison).

One possible bug on this site is the ability to Reply to another’s comment. On this thread, for example it doesn’t respond. I’m using Google Chrome.

  26. CrabbyBy Crabby on 15 August, 2012

I’ve always loved your many contributions to the WP community, your content, your plugins/products, and expertise, and I also like the new look for its general style and design… do you smell a big butt coming…
BUT, my good googliwoogly, how gargantuan does your ego have to be to put a gigantic caricature of your own head on your site? And not just at the top, but in the footer as well?! Just wow.
It’s just my opinion (based also on lots of professional marketing and branding experience), but I think your brand, your credibility, and reputation would come across a bit better with more humility. I’m not saying the caricature is all bad, you can still use your cartoon self for recognition, just maybe not so much “I’m Superman” attitude. sheesh.

    Really nice redesign.
Also loved the awesome liquid behavior.

  28. Syed BalkhiBy Syed Balkhi on 15 August, 2012

  29. The FrostyBy The Frosty on 15 August, 2012

Not bad. Liking the old one a bit more. I feel there is a bit missing in the new design. I am sure, like my redesigns it’s always changing..

  30. LaurenBy Lauren on 15 August, 2012

Love the new design. Nice and clean. I just switched to Genesis also. Loving it. Highly recommend it.

  31. MitchBy Mitch on 15 August, 2012

7/10. Its fresh and does not look as cluttered as the old design.

Ive used studiopress amoungst other framework. Probably the most powerful one would have to be the Ultimatum Framework.

I think this design is better than the last and im glad is mobile responsive also.

    Onwards and upwards

Genesis Framework is certainly a good choice.

  34. Michael BorgerBy Michael Borger on 15 August, 2012

I liked the last site, but this one looks nice, also. I just need to give it some time to grow on me. :)

Actually, I use Genesis (and the AgentPress 2.0 child theme) for my own site, and I can say it’s performed very well.

  35. ShashaBy Shasha on 15 August, 2012

Right ..I think After Joost Move..this proves How good genesis is?..

    New design looks great!

  40. KrisBy Kris on 16 August, 2012

Looking forward to video seo! Awesome redesign!

  41. ScottBy Scott on 16 August, 2012

You might want to change “redesign” at the beginning of the article to “web site redesign”. It wasn’t until I reached the comments that I realized that you were not talking about your plugins.

  42. Frederico GorskiBy Frederico Gorski on 16 August, 2012

Hello Joost, nice redesign. I think you have noticed that, but there’s been lots of thread reporting bugs or crashes after latest WP-SEO update. I know this isn’t the place, but I am doing it here because I really enjoy your work, and I think you should take a look at it, cause support threads on WP are getting really huge on this.

    greetings

  43. shyam josBy shyam jos on 16 August, 2012

simple yet elegant design i really loved it ,but why no responsive theme ?

  44. GerardBy Gerard on 16 August, 2012

What about the w3c validation of the new «rel=publisher» of your plugin for SEO? This code has one error in w3c. I suggest you to put the code like this:
    https://plus.google.com/?rel=publisher

Anyway, if I leave empty the box of the publisher, appears the code , and this has 2 errors of w3c.

    Sorry for my English. Regards.

  45. Liew Cheon FongBy Liew Cheon Fong on 16 August, 2012

big font size, white space.. very nice!

And, it is responsive design! I just had a redesign for my blog with responsive theme too. :)

  46. diavdBy diavd on 16 August, 2012

Best part I like about this post is the video plugin! Been looking forward to this Joost. What will you price it at?

  47. diavdBy diavd on 16 August, 2012

Grt tks! Do you have something in the pipelines that is going to make rich snippets a doddle?

  48. MJFieldBy MJField on 16 August, 2012

  53. MK TantumBy MK Tantum on 17 August, 2012

Love the new look! I’m hoping you’ll blog about the whole redesign process at some point in the future. I’m in the midst of coordinating a massive redesign for a client, and have a lot of concerns regarding potential SEO impact. It would be great to know what impact the redesign had on your site metrics, if any. Any pointers or pitfalls for someone about to embark upon a similar journey?

    Cheers!

  54. JaredBy Jared on 17 August, 2012

The redesign is cool. I like the bigger comment pictures and the unique headers. The Video SEO is really exciting! Any plans to offer a developer version like what Gravity Forms offers? It would be a great addition to some of my client’s websites we’re developing.

  55. Chris CreeBy Chris Cree on 18 August, 2012

Congrats on the redesign, Yoast! Genesis is a fantastic framework to work with too, both from the developer’s side and from the end users side. Good stuff all around.

  56. Rich StraussBy Rich Strauss on 18 August, 2012

I also started using Genesis recently. Looking forward to the “longer story on the how and why”! Very nice redesign!

  57. Phil McDermottBy Phil McDermott on 18 August, 2012

Big congrats on the redesign. I got a real shock when I visited and the change looks great. Also like the mobile responsive layout, works really well.

I am a recent convert to Genesis and so looking forward to ‘the full story’ as it sounds really interesting.

  59. Kiran ChikkalaBy Kiran Chikkala on 19 August, 2012

Since few days i was in confused state whether to use genesis framework for my portals. By now i am happy to see genesis on yoast and confident to use for clients and as well as mine.

But do you prefer to use genesis seo or yoast seo?

  60. Sharon VazBy Sharon Vaz on 20 August, 2012

Joost, your new site is shaping up well. I love what you’ve done with home page to channel your traffic according to interest / need. I’m sure THAT will do wonders for your Google bounce rate. (:

On a personal note, I would be interested to hear about how things evolve working with your spouse. I’m about to get into that position myself and it seems both scary and exciting at the same time. I would certainly appreciate any nuggets that you’d like to share at a later date.

I loved the new design. Looks better than the old one :)

  62. KevinBy Kevin on 22 August, 2012

Love the new look. As a developer, I’ve also found Genesis the best of all the frameworks. Tried all the others but keep coming back to Genesis. Naturally I always add in Yoast SEO, Clicky and Google Analytics plugins too!

  63. tommyBy tommy on 22 August, 2012

Your new design really awsome. I’ve testing genesis for few week, I’ll change my themes to genesis next week.

Still tweaking and matching the colour.

  64. AnthonyBy Anthony on 22 August, 2012

  65. SteffenBy Steffen on 23 August, 2012

First time I’ve been on the site since the redesign, looks really cool! I like it and I’m curious if it will have an influence on visitors, will you keep us updated about that?

  66. KeithBy Keith on 23 August, 2012

Lovely redesign. Just wondering did you purposely kick the Google CSE or is it on the “to do” list for later?

  67. Charity KountzBy Charity Kountz on 24 August, 2012

Wait, wasn’t there a plugins page? What happened to the link to the SEO plugin? I love that plugin and use it religiously with all my clients.

Nice look, Can you share – how you got that caricature picture of yours?

  70. JoostBy Joost on 27 August, 2012

Hi Joost, new site is looking good. As a matter of fact was just reviewing Studiopress a few minutes before I came to your site. :-) A quick tip: the newsletter sign-up landingpage is still in the old design…

Keep up the good work, regards, Joost

  71. Aahna SaxenaBy Aahna Saxena on 29 August, 2012

New Design is really looking great, but if content is as great as yoast, who cares about design and looks.

  72. Kristofer NanceBy Kristofer Nance on 30 August, 2012

    Nice clean layout!
I have been running Genesis since last year and haven’t looked back since.
Of course I use your excellent Yoast SEO plug-in too.
    They play together nicely!

  73. QueepBy Queep on 1 September, 2012

Love the new design looks-wise, fantastic colors! But the header, particularly on the homepage, takes up quite a bit of space. Would this not effect serp? Apart from header space, the header itself and side menu looks like a major improvement to me, well done on a very slick job! Its as ‘friendly’ as corporate gets :)

  74. PiyushBy Piyush on 2 September, 2012

    really great design …
old is not bad but new design is super…

  75. MattBy Matt on 4 September, 2012

I like the lighter, brighter color scheme of the new design, but def prefer the layout and overall design of the previous site. It was more compact enabling for more information to be taken in all at once which led to me finding what I wanted quicker and easier. For this reason I prefer sites that don’t stretch out too far, but are more centered and compact.

  76. BargainmooseBy Bargainmoose on 5 September, 2012
