Remember that Greasemonkey script that I recently updated? Well, maybe you should just forget about that... I'd been working on a version of that script which works on Yahoo Site Explorer and MS Webmaster portal too, and now I've gone even one step further: I've bundled the three of them, and turned them into a Firefox extension!

If you're not convinced yet you should go get it now, here are some screenshots:

Update: just updated the script to 1.0.1 to fix a change in Yahoo!'s interface.
Another update: 1.0.2 is now available for download.

WordPress version detection

Sometimes you're browsing around and wondering whether a blog is a WordPress or not (at least I am)... So I created a small script that detects that, and show the version of the WordPress as well. A useful tool for all you blackhats out there too perhaps?

Update: as requested by Dave Davis in the comments, I've added trackback functionality detection as well. This will also work on non-WordPress blogs.

Readable nofollows

I noticed that on Dave's great new layout, his nofollow comment links where unreadable... This was caused by my greasemonkey script setting a pink background but not changing the text color and so forth. I've now changed it to do that, so I can read the name's in the comments. So if you're using this script, go get the new version of my nofollow-display greasemonkey script!

Update to statistics detector for yet another stats package

As requested by Ruben, I've added Clicky to the statistics detector Greasemonkey script, upgrading it to version 1.3.8, and installed Clicky on this site too. The interface looks quite good, I'll test it over the next few days and let you guys know what I think.

Greasemonkey auto-update notification

One of the biggest advantages of an extension over a GreaseMonkey script is the possibility of automatic update notification for the user. For my Greasemonkey statistics detector I've been looking in to a way to provide automatic update notification, without having to "phone home" on each use of the script. It's not finished yet, but this is what I've come up with so far.

Using the GreaseMonkey functions GM_setValue and GM_getValue, I store the last date at which I checked for updates. If that date was more than 1 week ago, I make the script download a simple small "version.xml" file from my server, which would contain something like:

</statisticsdetector>

If that version is higher than the current version of the script, for instance, if you were using version 1 (100), it would be older than 1.1 (110) which is on the server, and you would get an unobtrusive popup to notify you that you should update. It will then store the date at which it checked, and won't check for another week again.

Of course I will provide the code to this once it's finished, but I was hoping some of you would have some ideas on this, and perhaps some good recommendations...

Technorati Greasemonkey script removed

In response to my previous post about unlimited API queries, I was urged by David Sifry, CEO of Technorati, to contact the Technorati developers and work out a way to get my script working through the API.

I then contacted the developer team and got a great fast response from Ian Kallen, and we've been looking together at a way to get this to work without bashing the hell (my words) out of their servers. Up till now that didn't work, and they have asked me to remove the script for now.

The official statement: "The query pattern and absence of caching exhibits an operational pattern that we can't presently support. However, we're happy to work with you in the days ahead to provide a scalable interface to support this functionality."

Let's see what comes of that! For now, I'm taking the script down.

Technorati Greasemonkey script

Want to see the Technorati rank and the number of inbound links for a page? I wrote a Greasemonkey script that shows you just that, it does that by opening the search page for the current URL on Technorati and finding those values on it.

The first implementation I did used a script on my server, this version does it completely client side, using the wonderful GM_xmlhttpRequest function and some regexes.
