Sociable gets a new home
Over the last few months I've been doing a lot of work on my plugins. I've found out that with each new release, they get more users, which is good, and get more time demanding, which is unfortunate. Now with OrangeValley going so well, and the things we have planned there, as well as my wife being 7 months pregnant and the fact that we'll thus have a 2nd kid soon, I probably won't have as much time as I used to have to maintain all my plugins.
So when the guys from startups.com approached me about whether they could take over maintenance on Sociable, I happily said yes. They have plenty of experience and some very good ideas for the plugin, so I'm confident they'll do a good job.
Before any of you ask: yes, some money was involved in this transaction, but I can tell you that if I had to buy everyone who reads this a beer I'd still be bankrupt. I'll still be involved in the development for a while, but they'll be responsible for keeping the plugin up to date from now on. The new home for Sociable is called blogplay.com, and all that is left for me is to wish them all the best with maintaining Sociable!

Hi Joost,
At first cool to hear that you will become a father for the second time, and I really hope that the last part of the pregnancy goes very well. In that respect it is understandable that you have to make certain choices, although not always easy to do.
I respect your decision, and I'm happy to hear that you still will be involved with the development. It might also be good to have some "new fresh blood" in the development of a great plugin !
Keep up the good work, I'm looking forward to the upcoming updates, and formost support your wife the upcoming months ! ;o)

When you first mentioned this news, the smiley I used in the reply was: :(
But now, I think it is the best for the plugin and I wish BlogPlay the very best maintaining this awesome plugin! Where can I submit my feature requests? ;)
Thanks Joost for pulling this plugin out of the dirt and make it into a successful plugin!
by Fred Imparatta on 14 September, 2009 at 20:02
@coen you can submit your requests in the wordpress forum or through twitter to @blogplaycom. We'll keep an update log there too.
by Joost de Valk on 14 September, 2009 at 20:20
Great to hear that Fred :)
by Fred Imparatta on 14 September, 2009 at 20:48
Could you make sure it redirects in internet explorer? it's not doing it.
by Joost de Valk on 14 September, 2009 at 20:51
You sure that's not a cache issue?
by Fred Imparatta on 14 September, 2009 at 20:53
Tried it on several machines, weird.
by Coen Jacobs on 14 September, 2009 at 22:33
Thanks, sounds great and good luck on further developing!
(although it was meant as a little joke ;) )

Joost- Congrats on the forthcoming little one! Thanks for the update on BlogPlay.com, hopefully they can continue the great work you started. -Travis

Congrats, though I'll worry about Sociable until blogplay proves themselves. :) Now...maybe you'll have time to respond to the support issue on the RSS Footer support forum. ;) http://wordpress.org/support/topic/293826?replies=3

Congratulations for the Sociable! Big satisfactions come sometimes with some effort, but I'm sure that you love enough us, users of your products, to keep them up and working!

Thanks for all your hard work on Sociable (as well as all your other plugins!)
by Marcus on 15 September, 2009 at 08:39
Good luck with all that! It's nice to see that you'd rather see the plugin grow than hold onto it.
On a similar topic, what do you use to manage your plugins on here? Do you use a plugin or just specially styled pages?
by Ronen Bekerman on 15 September, 2009 at 13:19
Nice plug, i'll have to check it on my blog too.
by Markus on 15 September, 2009 at 19:26
Thanks for all the efford you put in sociable. I hope the new owners won't become too spammy
by Joost de Valk on 15 September, 2009 at 19:28
For all those with concerns about the new owners: I've got full confidence in them, for several reasons, but please consider as well, that if they do a bad job at maintaining the plugin, it is still open source, anyone can pick it up and make it's own version...
by Doug on 16 September, 2009 at 12:32
Let's hope no one has to make a new version but for a company that spent money on code you'd think that they could spend money on an editor. The large number of inconsistent text, misspellings and grammar errors on that site are what makes me very wary of the plugin's new home.
@nullvariable
PS Congrats on the impending addition to your family!

Joost, it's plugins such as yours that makes WordPress the incredible success it is. Adding Sociable to my project management blog gives it the professional look that I need to market myself and my small consulting practice to clients. Now my blog can compete with the big guys who have big IT departments and big web "producers."

We're using that plugin at our blog. I believe it's the best one in the social media integration plugins niche :)
I hope they will continue the good work you did!

Nice to hear that you will become father and so do I. It is as well nice to know that it is the second child and so do I :-)
I am using the plugin myslef and I really enjoyed tweaking it a bit. I have some ideas, which I would like to streamline and it would be great to know, where to post them!
I wish you all the best! and by the way cool presentation about SEO on the video!
Thnx

Joost, the sociable plugin I have used, but i find on the centre bookmark 8 big icons which on
blogplay.com is very attractive, how i want to have.
The sociable's icons are very small,if the icon is smilar to that i said above,I think sociable
maybe more popular.Good luck my friends, joost.
