PageRank dropped??
Although I don't see a PageRank update going on, somehow, the PageRank on my frontpage suddenly dropped to 5... Seems they're dropping PageRank on linksellers, JasonD was hit as well...

Worth taking a look at.

it didn't affect my rankings btw.

Never sold a link in my life - my site seems to be showing the same drop fro 6 to 5.
My take - there may be about to change the entire way TBPR is calculated and reported. They'd take it down altogether if they could...

I checked some local Dutch portals (startpagina and clones) and it looks like they are dropping too. But I'm not 100% convinced I'm right.
If it is a hit on links sellers, especially linkportals, I would love to see the results.

Looks like Phoenixrealm has dropped from 6 to 5 as well!!
by Richard Hearne on 5 October, 2007 at 12:54
Here's an interesting issue - while the actual TBPR displayed seems to have dropped by one point, the PR displayed in SERPs via SEObook tool shows the higher figure.
I know you're familiar with grabbing PR Joost - any ideas on whether there are multiple sources for TBPR?
by Joost de Valk on 5 October, 2007 at 13:06
All the datacenters are showing the same PR, yet the rankings haven't changed at ALL. I'm guessing this is just to poke a bit.
Richard: perhaps you've been buying links? :)
by Mirco on 5 October, 2007 at 13:30
I can't see any changes on the Pagerank. All sites where I remember the PR have still the same.
by Joost de Valk on 5 October, 2007 at 13:32
Yeah it's not an update, posts that were made 1 day after the previous update haven't gotten PR yet. It's just selectively on sites, though I see a LOT of Dutch link selling sites loosing PR.
by Richard Hearne on 5 October, 2007 at 13:40
I take it all back - it must have been a relic from going from your site to mine. Still PR6 across all DCs.
Moi - buy links? Perhaps late last year, but these days I don't need them (too much ;-) ).
I think it's fair to say we can expect some further changes in an attempt to offset the surge in SEO Google is observing.
by Joost de Valk on 5 October, 2007 at 13:40
yeah think so too.

Apparently, Google has rolled back their index due to spam - end of june / early july?. See http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/10/01/google_spam_infiltration/ for info, and blog from Matt Cutts:

@Karl: btw I looked at it, and they're indeed stealing content and doing some sneaky flash based redirection... The domain is banned though.

I had one site loose over 800 backlinks. No changes in PR on any of my sites, tho.
by Champi on 7 October, 2007 at 12:16
Many sites already dropped with one point. A lot of talking at the forums. Mine too :(
by Wiep on 7 October, 2007 at 13:07
"it didn't affect my rankings btw."
Ok, so what's the problem? ;)
by Joost de Valk on 7 October, 2007 at 13:12
Who said there was a problem? :P
by David Hopkins on 7 October, 2007 at 13:21
John Chow has also dropped from 6 to 5.
by Wiep on 7 October, 2007 at 14:03
I didn't, but I noticed you changed your blogroll's set up.
Or did that happen together with the other layout changes?
by Joost de Valk on 7 October, 2007 at 16:59
Yeah that was part of the overall change. However the "penalties" are quite specific, so for now it's just toolbar PR, basically just FUD, in a while it might be more...
by SEO Carly on 10 October, 2007 at 05:42
I think it's FUD as well, these PR changes havn't propogated through the DC's like a regular update which is highly odd.
If any recalculation has gone on due to link selling, one would assume a deep crawl to identify all possible sold links within a website. Then the new dataset pushed to the first DC, followed by a propogation between the other DC's over a day or two.
This hasn't happened, it's been instant which is quite odd. Also Google Directory appears to be showing the new -1PR values. I can't see them updating this the other week then again for this when it took nearly 2 years for 1 update.
Almost seems like a glitch.

Can someone please tell me why my website http://www.spiralteck.com page ranks keeps alternating between pr3 and pr4
by DemoGeek on 25 June, 2009 at 14:41
I had a page rank of 3 for a while now...but very lately it has dropped to 2 and is impacting the traffic quite a bit. Any thoughts on why this must have happened? Any pointers on how to get back to that 3 level at least?
by sms on 25 August, 2009 at 22:18
i need info on how this ranking thing works.
