Google: keyword density should NOT be this important
I'm talking about the Dutch SERPs at the moment. Google has been getting better and better at recognizing synonyms, plurals and singles etc in Dutch, and a few other European languages too. This caused a problem though, because suddenly, all our "startpagina's", pages full of links on a particular subject, had their keyword density doubled or tripled.
This creates some very odd looking results, see this search for "makelaar" instance, there's 5 pages in that top 10 that are of no use to anyone, beginning with the #1... Or check the SERP for "hypotheek" (mortgage in Dutch) the second site there basically is an affiliate site showing the big banks what they should be doing (writing good content about the subject), but it's probably ranking also because of the enormous keyword density for the word hypotheek... (Just search for hypotheek in your Firefox and check "highlight all", if the page is all yellow, you know what's happening.)
So basically, Google, do something about it, you're looking stupid now...
BTW, Google quality guys, check this out, I hope you know what to do with people promoting their sites like that :)

Nice article about key density, although its not the issue at the second website i think but something else, you can use the example, saves me a backlink, joking. The strange part about this is, it hardly ranks at the keyword "hypotheken", although its the same word.

Heh Rogier, nice of you to come by even though I outed your website ;) I do think it's keyword density, along with your linking, which is... Shall I say, rather agressive? :) I don't think it's weird you're not ranking for "hypotheken" when I look at the website and it's keyword density for "hypotheek", whereas there are only a few mentions of "hypotheken". Google is getting better at that, but it's getting there veeerrry slowly.

Er zijn natuurlijk zoveel factoren waarvan Google kan afleiden of de pagina over een bepaald onderwerp gaat. Het was natuurlijk al een bekend gegeven dat SEO'ers een bepaalde keyword density gingen toepassen.
Hoe meer (relevante) backlinks met linklove, hoe beter je scoort. Dat zie bijv. ook met Afterimages.nl en onderliggende sites.
Als je gewoon een normaal verhaal schrijft, met een goede koppen structuur, met goede titel, goede bestandsnaam, etc. dan doe je het goed. Als je gaat optimaliseren, wordt het overdreven. Dat zal Google ook snel doorhebben.

I just noticed Rogier's site is ranking high (spot 5) for the plural ('hypotheken') as well by now. It's truly an amazing accomplishment to rank in second place with an affiliate site for one of the most competitive and profitable keywords.
But it's well deserved, because the site has lots of quality content. And it looks great, too.

@Mighty mouse: well, good work deserves credit :) it's still unbelievable that it's that "easy" to rank there though :) And btw, the fact that it ranks for hypotheken too now is because Google is getting better at stemming.

well I believe structure of keywords are more important than keyword density. If keywords are structured properly and is mixed with synonyms, plurals, similar terms etc...Google is more likely to value the page...

Momenteel geeft google de meeste affiliate sites nog het voordeel van de twijfel. Ondanks dat links inkopen en een op een uitwisselen niet door google wordt gedoogd, zijn er nog steeds een heleboel partijen die het er nog steeds meer redden. (Ik wijs niemand met de vinger aan!)
Wij zijn geen lead generator, maar daadwerkelijk een financieel advies organisatie. Wij kopen geen links in en zijn dagelijks zeer druk met het plaatsen van nieuwsberichten en nieuw originele content. Ik kan jullie vertellen, als je netjes alle regels van google volgt het heel intensief is om hoog in de zoekmachines te komen. Onze site heeft meer dan 1000 pagina's aan hypotheekinformatie. Echter, helaas heeft google nog niet bemerkt dat wij het wel op een eerlijke manier doen en dat wij geen lead generator zijn. Ik denk werkelijk dat een klant er niet bij gebaat is, indien hij een hypotheekaanvraagfomulier achter laat bij een affiliate site. Men verkoopt deze gegevens en een klant weet nog steeds niet waar en door wie hij geholpen wordt en wat daar de kwaliteit is. Ik hoop dat Google snel ons als echte toegevoegde waarde ziet. Als financiele instelling is het bijna niet haalbaar zoveel benodigde tijd in SEO te steken.

@ Joost, ik denk dat je niet ziet waarom hypotheek weetjes zo hoog rankt. Ik zou zeggen, zet je SEO for firefox tool eens aan ;).
